Magnetic Filter FMF 240/1 for a Hydropower-Driven Generator in a Private Brewery
The hydropower gearbox of Kulmbacher Kommunbräu e.G. is eco-friendly, powered by the nearby Kulmbach stream. This setup allows the brewery to generate almost all the necessary electricity sustainably.
Problem
The gearbox of the private brewery’s 19th-century hydropower plant recently required a costly rebuild due to damage.
Especially in the initial operation period of newly installed systems, metal abrasion and fine metallic particles tend to accumulate in the system. These particles can cause expensive short-, medium-, and long-term damage. Additionally, a failure in power generation could halt the brewery’s production, leading to significant losses.
Solution: FRIESS Magnetic Filter FMF 240/1

As part of the rebuild, a FRIESS magnetic filter was installed to capture magnetic metal particles. This solution significantly reduces wear and minimizes potential failures.
The magnetic filter is housed in a durable, maintenance-free stainless steel casing and contains a powerful neodymium permanent magnet. It requires no power or filter materials, perfectly aligning with the brewery’s sustainable and ecological approach.
Depending on the FMF series model, the system can filter up to 500 liters of medium per hour, effectively removing even the tiniest ferromagnetic particles. The filter was installed in a bypass, allowing the cleaning of the magnetic rod without interrupting electricity production.
Result
A significant amount of metal particles was captured, especially during the initial operational phase. The amount of particles in the system was surprisingly high and without the magnetic filtration system, these particles could have caused substantial wear and tear. With the simple and effective solution provided by FRIESS magnetic filtration, the issue was resolved sustainably.
Advantages:
- Reduced wear on hydropower plant components
- Minimization of downtime
- Sustainable, long-term solution with no ongoing costs
